Abstract:
According to the mechanical properties and failure mode of two-pile thick caps, the principles of model building and method were discussed based on strut-and-tie model. The corresponding formulae for calculating the bearing capacity of two-pile thick caps were proposed and the design method was given. The indoor test results of six two-pile thick caps were adopted for verifying the design methods introduced in different country codes and the strut-and-tie model design method presented in the paper. The results show that all of the methods used for designing the two-pile thick caps are safe and reliable, however, the strut-and-tie model used for designing thick pile caps represents the load-transferring mechanism, and the bearing capacity calculated by using the method presented in the paper is in good agreement with the test data.
